Accelerated Book Marketing's Tip #55:

Book marketing is a lot of work. Most authors want to sell a million copies so that they can retire. As with a great many things, if you want to replace the income your day job is bringing in, you ll have to invest as much time (sometimes more) time to it before it will accomplish the end goal.

Accelerated Book Marketing's Tip #25:

Commercially publishing a book takes between 12-24 months AFTER you sign a contract with a publisher. If your subject is more timely than that, you need to seriously consider self-publishing or partner publishing your book.

Many non-fiction books are quite timely. Waiting for 2 years to get a book on the topic out on the market could significantly damage your chances for success. There are many ways to publish your work that gets your information to the market much more quickly.
